artist statement

Artist’s Statement

Art is an extension of the soul. Art is freedom of expression whether it is through the visual arts, music, literature, or theatre. Good art will reach out and grab your soul before the mind can interpret the image. Art allows people an often subconscious connection with the world around them. Art is the gateway of escape allowing deeper meaning and unspoken bonds between strangers to share more than experience, but raw and passionate emotion. Art connects people, and this world is vast. Music is proof. I have chosen the two-dimensional realm as my place in this world, and with this choice, I wish to do mural work for a greater good. It has been a goal of mine since I started painting to paint with a purpose. In brief, I want to paint a mural and tell a story about the painting in hopes they will remember it when they see the painting. They will remember the message of love, and it on subconsciously with their actions throughout the day, affecting each person they come into contact with. In the meantime I am currently double-majoring in Fine Arts and Psychology in order to pursue a career in Art Therapy. Most of my inspiration is from music and the surreal world of art, especially Dali. Each person on earth is an artist, some are just louder than others. Art is the language of the soul.
I have discovered that a musical influence has played a dominant role in appreciating art. I am currently working on a collection of old vinyl records, doing portraits of influential musicians with enamel paints of the surface.
In this body of work, I have used a traditional style of painting on the records, simply using enamel paint that will stick to them. Some mixed media is included to make the portraits more interesting, and color scheme also plays a role in the emotional content. My goal was to capture the essence of the particular musician and portray him for his “true colors” to the best of my ability. The world of art and music can influence people, as we have seen throughout our history, and my incentive in painting these people is to continue to spread their message visually.
